Cytokinesis
– Mitosis isn’t finished until the segregated chromosomes
are encapsulated in new cellular compartments. During the process
of cytokinesis, the cell membrane is constricted between the newly
segregated chromosomes and the membrane of the cell is fused to
create two new cells and ensure that the daughter cells obtain
an equal chromosomal complement. Cytokinesis is exquisitely choreographed
so that the position of the mitotic apparatus delineates the position
of the furrow. We are interested in understanding how the interplay
between the microtubule cytoskeleton, the chromosomes, the actin
cytoskeleton, and the cell membrane is coordinated to ensure proper
contractile ring placement and cell cleavage.
